How can you create a more environmentally-friendly kitchen? There are many ways, and it’s easy!  Energy-efficient food preparation and cleaning habits, using equipment made from sustainable materials, and dodging toxic chemicals are important if you want to have a truly healthy kitchen. Fortunately, making the right choices for your well-being is also good for the pocket and the planet.  Just try a few of these simple tricks for a healthy and green kitchen:

Do It Yourself. Avoid purchasing pre-prepared, frozen foods, and make them yourself, at home.  Many meals are made to be frozen and reheated without any loss in taste or quality, so there’s no reason to thaw and rehydrate frozen and dehydrated foods when you can skip these steps and buy and cook fresh.  If you have space, take it a step further and grow your own fruits, vegetables, using your composted kitchen waste as fertilizer.

You can also go green by making your own cleaning products from common household products.  You can clean your counters and hand-wash dishes with white vinegar and baking soda. There are many other DIY recipes for cleaners that can be used in the kitchen and around the house, just look online. Also, If you fill one side of your sink with soapy water and the other side with rinse water — and don’t let the faucet run – you can use maybe half as much water as a dishwasher does and saving money on your energy bill.

Choose Green Flooring and Cabinets. Eco-friendly products such as bamboo are an excellent way to give your kitchen a new look at the same time as using renewable materials. Bamboo creates a light and bright aesthetic and can be worked into your flooring and cabinetry. At Plumbtile, we care a large variety of Eco-Friendly tiles to add the “green” touch to your kitchen.

Recycle. This is probably one of the easiest ways to start going green, but it’s also the one most people skip.  It’s as easy as making a little bit of space for a recycling bin.  Without enough space dedicated to recycling it’s all too tempting to dump everything into the general waste bin. Look for a large, easy to clean receptacle to place recycled waste in and give it a roomy and easy to reach location in the kitchen or adjoining room such as the laundry. If it’s easy to recycle then everyone in the house is more likely to do it more often.

Install energy-efficient appliances. Energy-efficient appliances can mean they use less energy to run, consume less water, or emit less harmful chemicals when operating.  Also, using the right-sized pot on stove burners can save about $36 annually for an electric range, or $18 for gas.  Covering pots and pans also helps you cook more efficiently and keeps your kitchen cooler.  Try using a microwave or toaster oven to reheat or cook small portions. You can reduce cooking energy by as much as 80% when using your microwave for small portions. This also helps save on air conditioning costs in summer.

Making your kitchen green and healthy is just as easy as taking a few small steps and trading in a few old habits for a few new ones!  It can also be fun in the process.  Before you know it, you will be well on your way to reduced energy bills, improved health, and a better environment for us all, and that’s what makes it all worth it!
